March 1st’s meeting started off with a few students raising concerns about Open Meetings Law regarding last week’s approval and voting of the signing of the Student Reps letter. Go Green Consulting visited us and asked for support with their “Recycle Trivia” day on April 5th. We listened to a presentation by Mr. Lynn Schattner about Cyber Solutions, a possible candidate for a new Housing Guide host. We also heard from Internal and External Committees and Officer Reports. Two pieces of legislation were discussed and a few new business items were  brought to light.

Student Issues and Concerns

Mr. Max Taylor and Ms. Rachel Mattke both brought concerns to the Senate about Open Meetings Law. They feel the Senate acted irresponsibly and illegally last week in voting on the signing of the Student Reps letter. They feel this action violated Open Meetings Law because it was not on the agenda and posted before the meeting.

Senator Andrew Whaley addressed the Senate about the difference between abstaining from voting and voting “ay” or “nay.” Abstaining from a vote is equal to voting “ay” in a sense.

Senator Stephen Jansen received a complaint from a constituent about the wording of updates online and consideration of Senators and Directors using computers and cell phones during the meeting. This issue has been addressed by the PR Committee previously and will be addressed again if need be.

Green Initiative: Mr. Cooper, Ms. Abrahms, & Mr. Treutler

• Go Green Consulting (Speech 460) We are working with a local non-profit organization to promote sustainability.

Why we are here…

• Requesting student government support for sustainability project
• Need help building a “Trash Mountain” (i.e. recyclables!)
• Creation will be displayed during out “Recycle Trivia” event at the UC on April 5th
• These events coincide with a PSA Competition we are organizing

What we request from Student Government…

• We would like the PR committee to assist us in development
• We would like WSG Representatives to represent us inside classrooms
• We need help in collection of recyclable materials and building the model

What does this do for you?

• By joining our pledge team, WSG Representatives gain face-to-face interaction with students inside classrooms and faculty departments. Your participation will increase student visibility of Student Government, and help engage students in a cause important in society today.

The Senate moved to table the issue to the Public Relations Committee for review next week.

Cyber Solutions: Mr. Schattner

• Mr. Schattner is currently in South Dakota giving a presentation over Skype about the Housing Guide, trying to sell the Senate his company for a new housing guide.
• His service can provide 24/7/365 service, can import the existing housing guide information at no additional cost, can simplify the housing guide and user interfaces, can improve cash flow by accepting payments at the time of posting, can accept information feeds from inside and outside resources, can allow listings to be posted until they rent for one low price, among other things.

SUFAC: Mr. Draayers

• Finding a recommendation for the Sustainability Proposal, a possible Green Fund for campus.
• SUFAC’s recommendation is to have WSG create an Ad Hoc Committee to make sure the people who originally wrote the proposal were part of it and that there was some guidance from a SUFAC committee member.
• More WSG involvement is being requested because last year’s Senate charged the SUFAC committee to find something to do with the possible Green Fund.
• SUFAC will be part of New Business next week.

Con. Revis: Senator Ian Vaver

• Discussing External Committee appointments, brainstorming, especially regarding new senators and their appointments.
• Changes to the current section 10 Election rules and starting a new draft that will completely take over the current rules including online voting.
• If you have any suggestions regarding the SUFAC process feel free to bring them to the committee meetings.

General Ed. Review: Senator Karen Drydyk

• Student opinion has been requested by Professor Chris Henige, committee chair
• LEAP-Liberal Education America’s Promise
• Objectives, assessments linked to course goals
• Will aid students in showing how their education is linked and plays off each other
• The committee wants to review the progress of courses and hope for more to be not considered General Education classes
• They want to see a better connection of essential learning goals of the college to specific learning courses.

The Senate passed this piece of legislation 14-0.

S09-10:04: Resolution to Amend Article 7 of the Whitewater Student Government Constitution
The motion failed 11-3.

New Business

Assembly Bill 698: Mr. Scott Coenen

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

This bill amends the 2009-11 Authorized State Building Program to add one project for the University of Wisconsin System. The project consists of a renovation of Carlson Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The project is financed with $17,000,000 in existing general fund supported borrowing authority.

For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as an appendix to this bill.

Ride Share & Advertisement Bulletin Board: Mr. Luke Schlewski

Students of UW-Whitewater are in need of a ride share program and an advertisement board. The ride share board will be in the UC and will consist of a quality map of WI and part of IL and a place for people to put their information. The advertisement pillar is located in the UC’s concourse. Look for more information next week from Luke.

Announcements

P.E.A.C.E.: Senator Karen Drydyk

3rd annual Rock for PEACE is this year Friday, April 30th 11 a.m.-9 p.m. at the Greenhouse Cafe. Union made t-shirts in the US are sold for $10 and profits go to Invisible Children in Uganda. Money will also be donated to the Whitewater Community Garden for the food to be donated to the Whitewater Food Pantry.

February 22, 2010 Meeting

The meeting on February 22nd was filled with reports and new legislation (S09-10:03 and S09-10:04). Directors Schalewski and Rogers gave a presentation on our new housing guide and elections information was brought forward including a public relations plan.

Please welcome Elvisa Pasic as the newest member of WSG! She will be serving as an off-campus senator.

Speakers

Legislative Liaison for UW-Whitewater: Ms. Kachel

Ms. Kachel spoke of her job as the Legislative Liaison for UW-Whitewater. When there are bills or the state budget concerning UW-Whitewater, she serves on committees at the state level.

She notified WSG of upcoming issues: The state senate seat on the 15th will be a hot seat up for grabs, Democrats hold 18-15 majority. Governor’s race is this year, very important. March 15th a legislative breakfast is being held for representatives of the state and national levels on campus.

The speaker at that breakfast will be Dr. Russ Kachian talking on the impact of UW-W on the region as far as jobs and the economy.

The Ad Hoc Committee decided to table the letter to the Senate and the Senate decided to table it to next week, March 1st.

External Committee Reports

Diversity Leadership: Senator Stephen Jansen

LGBT-

• UW-Whitewater was the last school in the UW System to host the Drag Show. It was successful and fun!
• The Board of Regents is looking to have a more inclusive admissions policy to be more gender neutral or at least less gender biased.
• March 1st there’s going to be a Gender Equity Report at 3 p.m. in UC 259.
• The Women’s Studies and LGBT conference is coming up March 17th, PB Poorman award announced, art show opening, lots of speakers.

Campus Climate Survey-

• Everything’s moving along as planned. Next step is to analyze all the results, the committee will review them, privacy concerns will be addressed, and then it will be sent back to the person taking care of the overall project. The Chancellor will see it first and then the committee will.
• May 4th is when the climate survey results will be presented at an event in the UC. A follow-up event in the fall is being planned for more data result presentations.

Ad Hoc Committee: President Scully

Please read the letter linked in this blog. This is the issue the Senate is discussing. Student Representatives letter

President Scully and Vice President Mabeus were the only president and VP in the UW System who didn’t sign this letter. They wanted to get the Senate’s take on it first.

The Senate voted to have President Scully and Vice President Mabeus sign the letter.

New Business

Housing Guide: Directors Luke Schalewski, Jay Rogers

There are 3 solutions to the housing guide: CyberSolutions, NoMoreDorms.com, and staying on our own server. Jay and Luke’s suggestions are to go with CyberSolutions because of the total customizable feature of it. This would be the best bet to get landlord satisfaction which brings in money to our budget and then we can pull in student attention.

Senate decided to bring in both CyberSolutions and NoMoreDorms.com into a meeting so the Senate can ask questions.

Standing Rules
2.4 Procedure for Passing Legislation

A. At the first meeting following the submission of any legislation, all clerical and content changes to any legislation will be solidified and voted upon by Senate. Voted clerical and content changes must pass by a 2/3 majority vote.

B. On the meeting one week following the introduction of the legislation, there will be a ten minute discussion on the legislation. This can be extended by a vote of the Senate. Following the discussion of the legislation, voting will take place.

February 15, 2010 Meeting

February 15th’s meeting didn’t have a lot of new things going on. Senator Vaver talked about the Constitutional Revision Committee and their future endeavors. And Senators Jansen and Vaver gave their report on the Chancellor’s LGBT Taskforce committee. Officer reports took up the main part of the meeting. Quick one tonight!

Constitutional Revision Committee: Senator Ian Vaver

5 p.m. Monday, outside the office

Issues going through Con. Revis. Comm. need to be put through Speaker Schoenemann and Senator Vaver by next Monday’s meeting. Anything that comes up of anyone wanting to change something in the constitution would be on the Senate agenda pending Con. Revis.’s approval. Please get any changes in to Schoenemann and Vaver by Friday morning, Feb. 19!

Chancellor’s LGBT Taskforce: Sens. Stephen Jansen and Ian Vaver

Any ideas to enhance students’ experiences on our campus please let this committee know. Should SafeWalk come back? What happens with campus police escorts? What if they’re on a call? Is the student stranded? The transitional period for transgender students can be rough, this committee’s trying to make the entire campus more neutral on issues. (i.e. name changes, identifying M/F, Homecoming King/Queen)

To clarify when to stand or not, stand when it’s your speaking turn, when you’ve been recognized by the Speaker. You don’t need to stand when you’re seconding a motion. February 8th’s meeting started off with concerns from student Rachel Mattke regarding dining services, elections committee, and the electronic menu boards. Ms. Nicole Juan spoke about United Council. External committee reports were abundant.

• Angled parking is something the campus is looking into to make it easier to get in and out of parking spots.

• Scully, Mabeus, and McMillian are also on UC Board
• Ride share is being worked on. Talk to Luke to if you have any ideas!
• SEAL has over 13,000 people going to events. Their goal is 20,000 by the end of the semester.
• If you have any ideas or concerns you’d like taken to the UC board please let us know!

• Talked about connecting students with disabilities to their professors
• Wellers, Fischer, and Tutt renovations-how will they be accessible to people with disabilities? Putting in elevators and bigger doors
• Let Sen. Schoenemann know if you’d like to join him at the committee.

Stand Out Officer Reports

President Tim Scully

Mr. Scully proposed a motion, and it was passed by Senate, to create an Ad-Hoc Committee.

The membership of the committee shall consist of:

1. the WSG president
2. 2 executive board members appointed by President
3. 2 Senators appointed by the Speaker of the Senate.

The Ad-Hoc Committee shall review the following:

1. any documentation relating to a potential merger
2. recommendations made by the Student Reps Group
3. recommendations and info from United Council

The committee shall report to the Senate on Feb. 21:

1. decisions made by the Student Reps
2. recommendations on a potential merger
3. any further information requested by the Senate
4. any Legislation regarding a merger if recommended.

RETREAT THURSDAY 5-10 p.m. in the Warhawk Involvement Center. Eat before you come. Feel free to bring treats for yourself or others. Talk to Sen. Tissa McMillian if you cannot make it!

Parliamentarian’s Tipz of the Week

During business we need to make sure there’s a motion on the floor before people speak. In the interest of that, make sure you have your questions answered before the meeting: “It’s ok to work on WSG stuff Tuesday through Sunday!” If we follow these rules of thumb we’ll be more productive and efficient. Whitewater Student Government Elects New Officials for Spring 2010 Semester

Whitewater Student Government Elects New Officials for Spring 2010 Semester

Whitewater, Wisconsin – January 27, 2010 – Whitewater Student Government filled several open positions in the senate Monday, January 25, including speaker and deputy speaker.

UW-Whitewater juniors, Senators Justin Schoenemann and Curtissa McMillian were elected speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. Both Schoenemann and McMillian said they are excited to be in their positions and have big plans for the semester.

Schoenemann plans to work with the constitutional review committee to bring new legislation to WSG. Enforcing existing WSG rules and regulations is McMillian’s main focus for the semester.

Sophomore Andrew Whaley was re-elected into the parliamentarian position and junior Anna Schwarz was confirmed as the WSG clerk. Schwarz was selected in the fall semester to serve as clerk for the spring semester, but needed this semester’s senate to approve the selection.

WSG President Tim Scully said each person in a new position stands a good chance of succeeding in their respective positions.

“I look forward to working with each person who was elected and I hope they all are able to do a good job for WSG,” Scully said.

January 25, 2010 meeting

January 25th was the first meeting of the semester! It was a busy one, with filling the open Drumlin seat, the open Esker seat, and two of the 10 Off-campus seats. The senate also elected a new Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Parliamentarian for the semester.

December 7, 2009 Meeting

December 7th’s meeting was the last meeting of the semester. It was full of Internal and External Committee reports and Officer reports. We enjoyed refreshments provided by Chartwells. Happy Winter Break Everyone!!

Internal Committee Reports

Constitutional Revision Committee: Wednesday, 9 a.m., WSG office (Sen. VerVelde)

• Section 10 was not looked into, will continue to look at it going into next semester.
• Meeting tentative for this Wednesday, will be cancelled if classes are cancelled or driving conditions are unsafe.

External Committee Reports

Chancellor’s Committee on Disability Concerns: Friday, Dec. 4 (Sen. Schoenemann)

• DARC Model: Department Accessibility Research Coordinators. Universal teaching resources that all students can use. UW-Milwaukee’s using YouTube, Facebook, etc.
• If DARC comes to UW-Whitewater they’ll ask a WSG Senator to serve on the committee
• Committee members liked the idea, looks like it’s coming to campus as of now but there are a lot of details to work out.

Snow Removal Committee: Friday, Dec. 4 (Sens. Gilbert and Schoenemann)

• Informed University that e-mail goes to only some students about lot clearing. Hopefully that will be corrected. They’re also informing professors so they can inform students.
• No sand will be used to take care of ice problem. Using new ice that can handle -15 degree weather.
• New equipment will be used for snow removal to be more efficient.
• Might suggest angled parking for parking lots, but this will get rid of some spaces.
• Staircases should not be closed unless they’re damaged.
• General complaints about snow removal can go to 262-472-1320.
• Next semester’s committee members should also be on Parking Committee.

United Council: Saturday, Dec. 5 (Sens. Vaver, Gilbert, Director Coenen)

• UW-Parkside wants to hire an attorney to bring charges against their previous chancellor.
• At UW-Parkside non-student workers called Limited Term Employees (LTE) are forced to take a class which in turn makes them a student. Confusing but an important issue.
• Issues affecting students in other states: Pennsylvania–student taxes. California–tuition raised 32%, student protests. Handouts available–Talk to Sen. Gilbert

McGraw Award for Excellence–Send Tim an e-mail if you’d like the criteria and an application. Available for graduating seniors and need a 3.5 GPA at application to be eligible.
Bad Weather–Make arrangements for travel in the event that we still have classes.
Changes to Broadcast E-mail Policy–If you would like to see the changes e-mail Tim. Campus Communication Committee and Chancellor’s Staff approved it. Student Government announcements are still allowed via the policy.
