Student Issues and Concerns

Ian Boschert: Brought a concern to WSG about landlords misleading tenants about Internet speeds. He feels Internet speeds are too slow in his Stettler Apartment but was told otherwise when signing a lease. University Services Director Luke Schalewski informed him of the phone number for violations and suggested he contact the free lawyer if he is very concerned.

Max Taylor: Common Council Re-Election

• Mr. Taylor has changed his mind about not running for re-election for his District 2 Common Council seat. He came to WSG asking for all District 2 resident votes in tomorrow’s election.

• Elections are this week Wednesday and Thursday! 11 a.m.-6 p.m. in the UC. Need your student ID to vote.

Student Tech. Fee: Sen. Hagen Kaczmarek

• Fund provided by the Wisconsin System for general access labs (i.e. McGraw Labs, Upham Labs, Andersen Labs) ResHall labs not included.
• The committee’s calling for proposals on April 22^nd. Please contact Leslie Meyer – Advisor to the Dean – with ideas.

Special Event: Sen. Jeff Martin

• Summer camps, waivers and an alcohol clause were added to policies.

Sustainability Fund Ad-Hoc: Sen. Karen Drydyk

• Proposal was due today but there is not one available due to lack of committee meetings.
• Sen. Drydyk plans to have a proposal ready next week for WSG.

• University polling place plan is delayed significantly because of approvals needed by the state.
• Diversity among students and staff
  • About 3% of staff is of color
  • 17.9% of students are of color
  • Tim has more in depth details. Ask him to see them.
• The archway in front of Hyer Hall facing Main St. will be moved toward the building 20 feet to make a more safe intersection for cars and students. Bumpers on the sidewalk and talking crossing pads will be installed also to aide visually impaired students. Speaking crosswalk signs will be installed at Prince and Prairie street intersections with Main St. paid for by the city.

• The first motion to have WSG go with CyberSolutions as the new housing guide media failed 7-9.
• Another motion was made to enter an agreement with NoMoreDorms.com as the new housing guide system. That motion passed 8-7.
• NoMoreDorms.com is the new website of the WSG Housing Guide.

Student Issues and Concerns

Senator Sam Gilbert brought an issue forward to the Senate about people tearing posters down. He asks if you see anyone doing that to please ask them to stop and be respectful.

Sens. Stephanie Abbot and Stephen Jansen brought forward concerns from the Esker district constituent meeting.

• Anywhere there is a trash bin, there should be a recycling bin
• More cigarette containers to discourage people from littering cigarette butts–Warhawks repainted for the 25 ft. rules
• Chemicals being used to clean the residence halls–Are they environmentally friendly?
• More and better lighting on and around campus.

Dining Services Contract: Mr. Bob Barry

• The Chartwells bid was selected from the choices of A’viands, Chartwells, and Sodexo. They received the highest possible financial score of 400 points for their submission of the following financial elements: Daily Rates, commission guarantee, and investment.
• Some aspects of the remodeling proposal are: adding an Uno Grill (pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and appetizers) to the Down Under, Freshens (smoothies, healthy energy drinks, frozen coffee drinks and frozen yogurt) added to Beans, Zoup! Soup, and Pura Vida to be added.
• Additional changes: meal transfers in Willy’s Green Restaurant, meal transfers in the Center of the Arts, addition of a full-time dietician to the dining staff, and guest chef programs

Dear Voters:

When you decide who to vote for consider the following. My opponent and I have both served as prosecuters, having left our respective District Attorney offices at almost the same time about 20 years ago.

The biggest difference is what we have done since then. I have been a judicial officer, sitting full time on the bench since 2005. Before that, I focused on representing people and businesses in civil court helping people buy and sell homes and drafting clients’ wills, all the while being active in the community.

My opponent has focused on representing people charged with crimes including drug dealing, murder and child molestation. He has no judicial experience.

Elections: Mr. Cody Horlacher
Meetings are every other Thursday at 5 p.m. outside the office, UC 140

• One slate filed. However, there were not enough valid signatures on the constituent nomination papers.
• The election will be a strict write-in election.
• Tomorrow night, Tuesday, March 16 at 9 p.m. there is an informational session with Betsy Brandt explaining the rules within the residence halls. All students looking to run as a write-in candidate should be in attendance.
• This Thursday, March 18 at 5:15 p.m. Elections committee meeting to discuss further actions by the committee.
• Debate on March 30 at 6 p.m. will still happen but more as an open forum, question and answer session.

Dining Services: Senator Sam Gilbert
Next meeting is Tuesday, April 6th at 4 p.m.

• Committee took a tour of Esker Dining Hall
• Hope to being composting waste and may be cooperating with the city to do that.
• They have also reduced the use of trays to almost zero

United Welcome Reception: Senator Kristie Pedersen
Meetings are Sunday nights at 7 p.m. in the Warhawk Involvement Center

• Welcome Reception discussed with Dr. Tom Rios about pulling together incoming freshmen and cultural students.
• Met with several students from LU, SAO, BSU, DAAC, and WSG
• The welcome reception would be a way to get students involved, meet one another, and learn about various cultures.

Chancellor’s Advisory: Senator Justin Schoenemann

• Committee is focused on the “Chancellor’s Award” for faculty and staff that have “gone the extra mile” to make their classrooms or activities more accessible.
• They are hoping to get more students involved in the award process.
• Nominations are due March 19th

Sustainability Council: Senator Megan Arney
Next meeting is April 6th at 3:30 p.m. in the UC

• Discussed a competition between the residence halls to see who would be able to use the least amount of water.
• Discussed composting for Esker
• Using reusable “go boxes” could be a way to be more accessible.
• Hyland will also be getting solar panels in the near future.
• Every Monday morning at 8:30 a.m. in Career and Leadership Involvement Center there is a “Good Morning Green” event.

• Collective Bargaining: What is it? Collective bargaining involves workers organizing together (usually in unions) to meet, discuss, and negotiate work conditions with their employers. This normally results in a written contract setting forth the wages, hours, and other conditions which the parties agree on for a stipulated period.
• See Ms. Herlache for more information on Collective Bargaining.

Public Relations/Karri Duerwachter

• If you need a graduation sash please let me know! You need to write Whitewater Student Government a check for $40. You will get this deposit back if you do not wish to keep your sash, but if you would like to buy it then WSG collects the money.

Legislative Liaison for UW-Whitewater: Ms. Kachel

Ms. Kachel spoke of her job as the Legislative Liaison for UW-Whitewater. When there are bills or the state budget concerning UW-Whitewater, she serves on committees at the state level.

She notified WSG of upcoming issues: The state senate seat on the 15th will be a hot seat up for grabs, Democrats hold 18-15 majority. Governor’s race is this year, very important. March 15th a legislative breakfast is being held for representatives of the state and national levels on campus.

The speaker at that breakfast will be Dr. Russ Kachian talking on the impact of UW-W on the region as far as jobs and the economy.

Diversity Leadership: Senator Stephen Jansen

LGBT-

• UW-Whitewater was the last school in the UW System to host the Drag Show. It was successful and fun!
• The Board of Regents is looking to have a more inclusive admissions policy to be more gender neutral or at least less gender biased.
• March 1st there’s going to be a Gender Equity Report at 3 p.m. in UC 259.
• The Women’s Studies and LGBT conference is coming up March 17th, PB Poorman award announced, art show opening, lots of speakers.

Campus Climate Survey-

• Everything’s moving along as planned. Next step is to analyze all the results, the committee will review them, privacy concerns will be addressed, and then it will be sent back to the person taking care of the overall project. The Chancellor will see it first and then the committee will.
• May 4th is when the climate survey results will be presented at an event in the UC. A follow-up event in the fall is being planned for more data result presentations.

Ad Hoc Committee: President Scully

Please read the letter linked in this blog. This is the issue the Senate is discussing. Student Representatives letter

President Scully and Vice President Mabeus were the only president and VP in the UW System who didn’t sign this letter. They wanted to get the Senate’s take on it first.

The Senate voted to have President Scully and Vice President Mabeus sign the letter.

New Business

Housing Guide: Directors Luke Schalewski, Jay Rogers

There are 3 solutions to the housing guide: CyberSolutions, NoMoreDorms.com, and staying on our own server. Jay and Luke’s suggestions are to go with CyberSolutions because of the total customizable feature of it. This would be the best bet to get landlord satisfaction which brings in money to our budget and then we can pull in student attention.

Senate decided to bring in both CyberSolutions and NoMoreDorms.com into a meeting so the Senate can ask questions.

Standing Rules
2.4 Procedure for Passing Legislation

A. At the first meeting following the submission of any legislation, all clerical and content changes to any legislation will be solidified and voted upon by Senate. Voted clerical and content changes must pass by a 2/3 majority vote.

B. On the meeting one week following the introduction of the legislation, there will be a ten minute discussion on the legislation. This can be extended by a vote of the Senate. Following the discussion of the legislation, voting will take place.

Whitewater Student Government Elects New Officials for Spring 2010 Semester

Whitewater, Wisconsin – January 27, 2010 – Whitewater Student Government filled several open positions in the senate Monday, January 25, including speaker and deputy speaker.

UW-Whitewater juniors, Senators Justin Schoenemann and Curtissa McMillian were elected speaker and deputy speaker, respectively. Both Schoenemann and McMillian said they are excited to be in their positions and have big plans for the semester.

Schoenemann plans to work with the constitutional review committee to bring new legislation to WSG. Enforcing existing WSG rules and regulations is McMillian’s main focus for the semester.

Sophomore Andrew Whaley was re-elected into the parliamentarian position and junior Anna Schwarz was confirmed as the WSG clerk. Schwarz was selected in the fall semester to serve as clerk for the spring semester, but needed this semester’s senate to approve the selection.

WSG President Tim Scully said each person in a new position stands a good chance of succeeding in their respective positions.

“I look forward to working with each person who was elected and I hope they all are able to do a good job for WSG,” Scully said.
